After the team’s Sunday defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach Kyle Shanahan of the Niners broke the devastating news, stating that they suspect Aiyuk tore his ACL, which would sideline him for the remainder of the season.
But the Niners are still in good shape since Jauan Jennings has shown throughout his career that he is a reliable backup. However, San Francisco might still want to look into its alternatives; the Carolina Panthers might be able to help.
The 49ers were mentioned by Justin Melo of The Draft Network as one of the landing destinations that wide receiver Diontae Johnson could consider in a recent piece. He wrote as follows:
The 3–4 Niners are far from giving up on their season. They are still in the running for the NFC West title, one game behind the Seattle Seahawks. It is now imperative that Aiyuk be replaced. Christian McCaffrey’s return will be beneficial, and on Sunday, rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall made his professional debut. Getting Johnson would be a wise move if general manager John Lynch decides to add more experience rather than count on Pearsall to take over Aiyuk’s responsibilities right away.
In the final year of his two-year, $36 million contract and with the Panthers in the cellar at 1-6, general manager Dan Morgan would be wise to obtain something for the veteran wideout before he undoubtedly leaves town in 2025. Johnson is also visibly unhappy in Carolina.
Johnson would be a great addition for San Francisco, even though he would cost a Day 3 pick. Johnson can line up almost anywhere, and he has had three seasons of 800 yards or more, including a 1,100-yard season in 2021.
However, once more, the Niners’ interest in Johnson will mostly hinge on their perception of Jennings’ ability to fill in for Aiyuk. They probably believe he can, based on what we’ve seen from the Tennessee product over the years.
