Roster Moves: The Falcons elevate two defenders using controversial approach…See details

In a bold and controversial move, the Atlanta Falcons elevated two defenders from their practice squad ahead of their upcoming matchup. The decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny over roster management strategies within the league. By utilizing a seldom-used rule that allows teams to promote players without adhering to the usual restrictions, the Falcons aimed to bolster their defense against a high-powered offense. Critics argue this approach undermines traditional player development practices, while supporters believe it provides a necessary edge in a competitive landscape. The elevated players, known for their versatility and speed, are expected to play key roles in the Falcons’ defensive scheme. This unconventional tactic has sparked debate among fans and analysts alike as the team looks to secure a crucial victory.

At Raymond James Stadium, Atlanta will take on Tampa Bay on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Defensive tackle Demone Harris and cornerback Natrone Brooks are two defenders that the Falcons elevated using a normal practice squad elevation.

Both Harris and Brooks were added to the game day roster before last week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, marking the second time in as many weeks that they had done so.

Playing in 43 percent of Atlanta’s defensive snaps last Sunday, Harris participated in the action as part of the Falcons’ defensive line rotation. In the defeat, he noted one quarterback hurry. Brooks, meanwhile, played 16 special teams snaps.

Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium will host the Falcons vs. Buccaneers game at 1 p.m. ET.

Previous 2024 practice squad elevations include:

  • Week 1: defensive back Kevin King and wide receiver Chris Blair
  • Week 2: safety Dane Cruikshank
  • Week 3: none
  • Week 4: offensive lineman Matt Hennessy
  • Week 5: Hennessy and inside linebacker Josh Woods
  • Week 6: Hennessy and King
  • Week 7: Harris and Brooks

Reminder: each game, teams may use up to two players from their practice squad. There is a maximum of three elevations per participant. The player has to be added to the active roster if it happens a fourth time.

Ninety minutes before Sunday’s game begins, the Falcons will make their inactive roster public. At that point, the official status of starters Ryan Neuzil (knee) and Justin Simmons (hamstring) will be disclosed. On the team’s game report for Friday, Simmons was marked as doubtful and Neuzil as dubious.
