Sad tragedy: Shanahan explains why Purdy didn’t attempt deep passes vs. Seahawks” If we had tried more, I would have been shocked’ They have a really flexible defense that doesn’t break easily” shanahan pour out cryptic excuses” here’s his last shameless word…
For just the second time this season, Brock Purdy failed to throw the ball 20 yards or more during the 49ers’ 20–17 loss against the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2024, Purdy’s average depth of target was at its lowest, 5.8 yards. Coach Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers gave an explanation for the offense’s limited offensive capabilities on Monday.
If we had tried more, I would have been shocked by the way they play their coverages,” Shanahan stated over a conference call. “They have a really flexible defense that doesn’t break easily. In contrast, that is typically how things work, and getting the big plays on is difficult.
Jauan Jennings, a wide receiver, caught Purdy’s longest pass, which was a 19-yard completion, and he took it three yards more for a 22-yard gain. That was the offense’s longest play, which is unusual for a club that is famed for its explosive plays. Shanahan stated, “You don’t want to force them.”
“You want to put them in circumstances where you can capture them. However, the majority of the items they provided us with were hidden beneath.
Purdy finished 21 of his 28 passing attempts for 159 yards, the lowest total he had given up this season and the lowest the Seattle defense had given up since holding the Miami Dolphins to 140 yards in the air in Week 3.
Two weeks ago, in their Week 9 overtime defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, the Seattle defense gave up almost 300 yards through the air to Matthew Stafford and the offense. Due to Purdy’s seven penalties, the 49ers offense was moving backward rather than forward.
Shanahan stated, “They will force you to take those longer drives.” “We were prepared for that challenge and understood it would be present heading into the game. Although I believe we were up to the task, we were unable to overcome all of the penalties and obstacles we encountered.
Despite spending seven minutes on the field, the 49ers’ offense only managed to muster 26 net yards on their fourth drive of the game. Three of the 14 plays that Purdy and the offense ran were called back by penalties, including a holding penalty by Jennings and false starts by Aaron Banks and Colton McKivitz.
Shanahan stated, “I felt that one of the biggest issues for the offense that day was [the penalties].” In fact, I felt that our attacking performance was superior to that of the game on Thursday night.
I’m not sure how many 14-play drives I’ve participated in that didn’t result in a turnover, a missed field goal, or points. In Week 12, the 49ers face a formidable opponent in the 7-3 Green Bay Packers, who will seize any openings created by a careless, heavily penalized opponent.
