The St. Louis Cardinals are open for business, Black Friday customers. Since their competitive window is coming to an end, the team has made the decision to start over and intends to trade almost every player on the roster this off-season.

Trade rumors have already started to swirl around a number of well-known players, including All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who is signed through 2027 and has a complete no-trade clause.

The Cardinals, however, are also anticipated to make offers to a few different pitchers, including a former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher and another who might be a contender for their open closer role.

Cardinals Planning to Listen on Matz, Helsley

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that St. Louis plans to discuss trade talks this winter involving right-handed reliever Ryan Helsley and left-handed starter Steven Matz. Relocating both hurlers would assist in lowering the company’s anticipated Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) salary for 2025, which is estimated to be around $162 million according to FanGraphs RosterResource.

Next season, Matz, who played one season with Toronto in 2021, will begin the last year of a four-year, $44 million contract. Before going into free agency following the 25th season, he is expected to make $12.5 million. According to MLB Trade Rumors’ projection model, Helsley, who will also be a free agency following the upcoming season, is expected to fetch $6.9 million in his last arbitration year.

The 33-year-old lefty only made 12 appearances (seven starts) with the Cardinals last season because of persistent back problems. In his final eight innings, he gave up just one run while working solely out of the bullpen. He pitched 44.1 innings with 33 strikeouts, resulting in a dismal 5.08 ERA and 4.88 FIP.

Given that he is only two seasons removed from being worth 2.0 fWAR over 105 innings, Matz should have a robust market of suitors looking for a back-end starter despite his injury-plagued campaign.

The Cardinals will probably demand a sizable payout for Helsley’s services, which makes sense given that he only has one more year of club control left. A season ago, the 30-year-old recorded a career-high 2.3 fWAR in 65 bullpen appearances and led the majors in saves (49).

With a slider that was largely responsible for his 97th percentile whiff rate (36.1%) last season and an upper-90s four-seamer that placed in the 99th percentile in average velocity (99.6 m.p.h.), the right-handed closer also possesses one of the most potent arsenals in the game.

Finding a replacement for Jordan Romano, who was non-tendered by the team prior to last Friday’s deadline and is anticipated to go elsewhere in free agency, is part of the Blue Jays’ winter bullpen reconstruction. Given the likelihood that the front office will sign a free agent to cover that gap,

Moving Addison Barger, for instance, in light of Arenado’s anticipated departure, would probably involve deducting from the team’s excess of controllable infielders. With Helsley, Chad Green, and Erik Swanson as the back-end trio, it would offer a strong base from which to develop in the “pen.”

However, following the upcoming season, all three will be eligible for free agency.
