Ipswich Town have submitted an offer to sign an international defender, following their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Julio Enciso.
Ipswich Town has had an active January transfer window, with several new players joining Kieran McKenna’s squad at Portman Road. The first arrival was center-back Ben Godfrey, who signed on loan from Atalanta, followed by Jaden Philogene, who made a permanent move from Aston Villa.
Regarding additional signings, McKenna mentioned last week, “We’ll aim to add more if we find quality players who can enhance the team. I believe our squad depth is strong at the moment. If everyone returns to full fitness, our depth will be sufficient.”
“We’ll look to strengthen the team, whether that’s improving the starting eleven or adding quality off the bench, but only if the right players are available to truly elevate us.”
Meanwhile, Brighton attacking midfielder Enciso has been secured on loan. Although there’s no option to buy him at the end of the season, he could be a valuable addition, particularly as Manchester United reportedly made a last-minute effort to sign him ahead of Ipswich.
Reports suggest Ipswich Town, under McKenna’s management, could make up to five signings this month. With a center-back, winger, and attacking midfielder already secured, the focus now appears to be on adding a full-back.
According to Turkish reports shared by Sport Witness, Ipswich Town have submitted an offer for Galatasaray defender Elias Jelert. The 21-year-old is available for the right price, with Galatasaray aiming to recover the €9m (£7.6m) they invested in him last summer.
Ipswich’s offer appears to fall short of the reported figure, with the report noting: “If the red-yellows are prepared to take a loss on the Danish player they paid €9m for, this transfer could go through.”
Denmark international Jelert was recently linked with Everton as a potential successor to Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young.
However, Ipswich seems to have taken the initiative, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig praising Jelert in 2023, calling him a “complete full-back.”
Jelert, mainly a right-back, is also capable of playing as a left-back or right midfielder, providing McKenna’s side with valuable versatility if he joins.
He has played 25 matches across all competitions for Galatasaray, though only six of those were as a starter. This situation will be worth monitoring closely before the deadline, as Jelert could compete with players like Leif Davis, Conor Townsend, Ben Johnson, and Harry Clarke for the full-back position.
