Barack Obama really like NBA basketball, even though he may be a Chicago Bulls supporter. He hasn’t held back when complimenting Stephen Curry, and the two have both appeared during Kamala Harris’s campaign, albeit Obama seems more interested in the Harris-Walz partnership than Curry is.
Obama was recently interviewed by Tyrese Haliburton on the Young Man and the Three podcast and explained what made the dynastical Golden State Warriors so fun to watch.
Obama largely ignored the shooting prowess that made the Warriors famous, and instead focused on the selfless ball movement. “If you ask me the teams I enjoyed watching most over the last decade, it’s the Warriors, and before that, it was the Spurs,” said Obama. “I just like that style of basketball. ‘The Beautiful Game,’ and the ball’s popping, and nobody’s just backing up and dribbling the whole time, [the Pacers] are playing that style of ball.”
Of course, the reason the Warriors were able to emulate the success of the 2014 San Antonio Spurs was simply because Curry had no trouble getting open and moving when he didn’t have the ball. When the ball is in his hands, he is a deadly shooter, but when his teammates have the ball, he does everything he can to get in a successful position.
One can easily argue that Kevin Durant’s signing with the Warriors “ruined” the NBA for a few years by decimating any party left, but before he made his fateful choice in 2016, the Splash Brothers in Golden State made the offense a work of art, and Obama appreciated it as much as anyone.
