This ranking has a glaring flaw. Experts must begin each club with a base forecast at the outset of the season, particularly in the modern era where teams vary greatly from year to year. As a result, it is gradually becoming a true depiction of the team’s identity and potential for the remainder of the season. It is difficult for BPI to be precise at the beginning of the season.
The BPI ranking of Duke and Kentucky is the case and point. With a BPI score of 22.2, Duke is rated second in this system, five points ahead of Kentucky (a fairly significant difference). But according to the BPI’s definition, the score is determined by “the point margin per 70 possessions vs. an average opponent on a neutral court.”
Suppose that on a neutral court, Duke and Kentucky square off, with Kentucky winning and a five-point margin of victory. This would definitely help them defeat the Blue Devils, wouldn’t it? The opposite is not true. Because it must begin with a guess and is unable to make quick adjustments even after games like Duke and Kentucky are played, this is where the BPI fails in the early going of the season.
